Evidence Based Counseling
What to know:
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in counseling is the integration of the best available research, clinician expertise, and client values/preferences to provide effective treatment. It moves beyond just applying "proven" techniques to ensuring interventions are tailored to the specific needs and cultural context of the client.
There are 3 pillars of evidence based counseling:
- Scientific Evidence (rigorous studies)
- Clinician Expertise (clinical judgement)
- Clients Needs/Values
Common Modalities of EBP:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
This process involves the 5 A's of the evidence cycle: Asking, Acquiring, Appraising, Applying and Analyzing outcomes. While evidence based modalities are very common and beneficial, success relies much on the therapeutic alliance and empathy.
